Calendar & Timeline
Learn how to navigate your activities across time in Cadence.
How does the timeline view work?
The timeline is your main interface for tracking activities:
- Time slots: Each slot represents a 30-minute period (48 per day)
- Color-coded blocks: Activities shown as colored rectangles
- Multiple views: Choose between Circular or Linear timeline
- Scrollable: Scroll vertically through hours, horizontally between days
- Tap to log: Tap any time slot to log an activity
- Auto-save: All changes save automatically
The timeline gives you a visual, intuitive representation of how you spend your time.
What are the different timeline views?
Cadence offers two timeline visualization modes:
Circular Timeline
Clock-inspired radial view:
- 24-hour clock face layout
- Activities arranged around the circle
- Intuitive time-of-day understanding
- Rotating view follows current time
- Perfect for visual overview
Linear Timeline
Traditional vertical timeline:
- Top-to-bottom chronological layout
- Scrollable list of time blocks
- Detailed activity information
- Easy editing and note-taking
- Precise time slot visibility
Switch between views in Settings or with swipe gestures.
What is the calendar with completion gauges?
The calendar dialog provides visual feedback on your tracking consistency:
Features:
- Monthly view: Full month calendar layout
- Completion gauges: Circular progress ring on each day
- Percentage tracking: Shows 0-100% based on logged timeslices
- Visual motivation: See your tracking consistency at a glance
- Theme integration: Gauges use your app theme colors
Understanding the gauge:
- Each day has 48 possible 30-minute timeslices
- Gauge percentage = (logged timeslices / 48) × 100%
- Example: 24 logged timeslices = 50% completion
- Full circle = 100% (entire day logged)
Interactive features:
- Tap any date to view its timeline
- Double-tap a day to recenter gauge at midnight
- Swipe to navigate between months
- Future dates are disabled (grayed out)
Can I change the time slot duration?
Currently, time slots are fixed at 30 minutes each, providing a good balance between:
- Granularity: Enough detail without being overwhelming
- Simplicity: Easy to track and review
- Standard: Aligns with common scheduling practices (half-hour increments)
Why 30 minutes?
- Most activities naturally fall into 30-minute increments
- Not too detailed (exhausting to maintain)
- Not too broad (loses meaningful patterns)
- 48 slots per day is easy to visualize (0-100% completion)
Future options: We're exploring customizable time slots based on user feedback. Potential options may include:
- 15-minute slots for detailed tracking
- 1-hour slots for simpler tracking
- Flexible duration per activity type
